Unknown to Afghanistan.
From north-western and northern Pakistan (possibly from eastern Afghanistan) eastern in Himalayas at least to eastern Nepal, and in southern and south-eastern China (western and southern Sichuan and from Yunnan east to Zhejiang and Fujian, also Hong Kong); possibly also northern and north-eastern Myanmar.

Slightly paler and less streaked birds from western part of range (Punjab region) described as subspecies oreinus, but variation considered part of a cline.
