Subspecies
Genus probably closely related to Tmetothylacus and Hemimacronyx. May form a superspecies with Pangani Longclaw (Macronyx aurantiigula). Validity of geographical subspecies doubted by some authors, who prefer to treat species as monotypic.
The following 3 subspecies are recognised:
wintoni Sharpe, 1891 - Central and south-western Kenya (central highlands, L Victoria basin, and Masai Mara) and northern Tanzania (south to Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater, east to L Manyara and Ardai and Sanya Plains).
altanus Clancey, 1966 - Eastern and southern Angola (eastern plateau), south-eastern DRCongo and extreme south-western Tanzania south to north-eastern Namibia, northern Botswana (Okavango Delta, Linyanti Swamp and Chobe floodplain), extreme north-western Mozambique and extreme northern and central Malawi (R Songwe mouth, and Lilongwe area). Also on highveld of north-eastern and central Zimbabwe.
