Subspecies
Genus probably closely related to Tmetothylacus and Hemimacronyx. May form a superspecies with Yellow-throated Longclaw (Macronyx croceus).

The following 2 subspecies are recognised:

ascensi Salvadori, 1907 - Angola, central and southern DRCongo, Zambia (west of Luangwa Valley) and extreme northern Namibia; probably also extreme northern Malawi.
fuelleborni Reichenow, 1900 - South-western Tanzania.
