Subspecies
Forms a superspecies with White-winged Snowfinch (Montifringilla nivalis) and Tibetan Snowfinch (Montifringilla henrici), and all have in the past sometimes been considered conspecific.
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
adamsi Adams, 1858 - Northern Kashmir and Ladakh north-eastern along northern Tibetan Plateau to Kunlun Shan (in Xinjiang), and south-eastern along Himalayan chain to Sikkim (northern India).
xerophila Stegmann, 1932 - Central China from north-eastern Qinghai (Qilian Shan) south to eastern Tibetan Plateau and south-central Sichuan (Litang).
