Subspecies
Forms a superspecies with Yellow-spotted Bush-sparrow (Gymnoris pyrgita), and sometimes treated as conspecific.
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
- transfuga Hartert, 1904 - South-eastern Turkey, south-eastern Iraq, south-western Afghanistan and southern Pakistan; possibly also the Syrian Euphrates.
- xanthocollis (Burton, 1838) - Eastern Afghanistan and northern Pakistan east to southern Nepal, and most of India.
