Subspecies
Subspecies vicinus sometimes subsumed into nominate.

Hybridization with House Sparrow (Passer domesticus) has been recorded.

The following 3 subspecies are recognised:

  • damarensis Reichenow, 1902   -  Extreme south-western Angola, Namibia, western and eastern Botswana and extreme western Zimbabwe south to northern South Africa (south to northern Cape, North West Province and northern Limpopo Province).
  • melanurus (Müller, 1776)   -  South-western South Africa (southern northern Cape and western Cape east to south-western Free State).
  • vicinus Clancey, 1958   -  Eastern South Africa (southern Limpopo Province south to eastern Free State, western KwaZulu-Natal and eastern Cape) and Lesotho.
