Subspecies
Has been considered to form a superspecies with Russet Sparrow (Passer cinnamomeus), and sometimes treated as conspecific.
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
- castanopterus Blyth, 1855 - Djibouti, Somalia and eastern Ethiopia (eastern from c. 41° east).
- fulgens Friedmann, 1931 - Extreme southern Ethiopia and northern Kenya (south to Kapedo and Marsabit).
