Subspecies
Geographical variation mostly not well marked; subspecies pagodarum perhaps not diagnosable and could be subsumed within musarum. Subspecies aurata intergrades with musarum in southern Myanmar (Karen Hills).

The following 5 subspecies are recognised:

magna (Hodgson, 1837) - Nepal, Sikkim, Bhutan, eastern Bangladesh and north-eastern India east to southern China (south-eastern Xizang east to west, southern and south-eastern Yunnan, south-western Guizhou and western Guangxi) and northern Myanmar.
aurata Blyth, 1855 - Central and eastern Myanmar.
musarum Deignan, 1956 - South-eastern Myanmar, northern Thailand, Laos and northern Vietnam (western Tonkin).
pagodarum Deignan, 1956 - Southern Myanmar, western Thailand and southern Malay Peninsula.
remota Riley, 1940 - South-central and southern Vietnam.
