Habitat

Subspecies
Geographical variation extremely well marked in some cases, isolated subspecies wrayi perhaps approaching species level. Birds in Cambodia (except south-west) of uncertain racial identity.

Proposed subspecies ariel, described from near Nokrek (in Garo Hills), in north-eastern India, considered inseparable from assamensis.

The following 10 subspecies are recognised:

  • saturata (Hodgson, 1836)   -  Himalayas from northern India (Garhwal and Mussoorie) east to Nepal, Bhutan and southern China (south-eastern Xizang).
  • assamensis (Horsfield, 1840)   -  North-eastern India, northern Myanmar and southern China (western Yunnan).
  • petersi Deignan, 1948   -  Eastern Myanmar, extreme northern Thailand, northern Laos, northern Vietnam and south-eastern China (south-eastern Yunnan, western Guangxi).
  • galenae Deignan, 1948   -  North-western Thailand.
  • sanguinipectus Walden, 1875   -  South-eastern Myanmar.
  • anomala Richmond, 1900   -  Southern Thailand (south to Trang).
  • wrayi Sharpe, 1887   -  Malay Peninsula south of Trang.
  • ochra Deignan, 1948   -  Southern Laos and central Vietnam.
  • cambodiana Delacour, 1948   -  South-western Cambodia.
  • johnsi Robinson & Kloss, 1919   -  Southern Vietnam.
