Subspecies
Additional proposed subspecies are trochiloidea (described from Blue Mountain, in Lushai Hills of north-eastern India) and melittae (Mt Victoria, in western Myanmar), both subsumed in isolata, and harrietae (Phu Kobo, near Xiengkhouang, in Laos) and bangsi (Hongsurkou, in Hubei, in central China), which are synonymized with dabryii.
The following 4 subspecies are recognised:
gouldiae (Vigors, 1831) - Himalayas from northern India (Sutlej Valley east to Arunachal Pradesh) east to southern China (Kobdo, in south-eastern Xizang).
dabryii (Verreaux, J, 1867) - Breeds central and southern China (including Pome, in south-eastern Xizang) south to extreme north-eastern India (extreme eastern Nagaland), Myanmar (except western and south) and northern Indochina. Non-breeding also Manipur, northern Cachar, southern Myanmar (south to northern Tenasserim) and northern Thailand.
isolata Baker, ECS, 1925 - North-eastern India (Assam south of R Brahmaputra, Nagaland except extreme east, Manipur), eastern Bangladesh (south to Chittagong Hills) and western Myanmar (Chin Hills).
