Subspecies
Possibly part of the superspecies formed by Apo Sunbird (Aethopyga boltoni) and Lina's Sunbird (Aethopyga linaraborae). Subspecies decolor possibly inseparable from nominate.
Proposed subspecies excellens (described from Manitoe, in Albay District of south-eastern Luzon) considered unsustainable, and is synonymized with nominate.

decolor Oustalet, 1876 - Northern Luzon, in northern Philippines.
flagrans Oustalet, 1876 - Central and southern Luzon and Catanduanes.
guimarasensis (Steere, 1890) - Panay and Guimaras, in west-central Philippines.
daphoenonota Parkes, 1963 - Negros, in south-central Philippines.
