Subspecies
Has been thought possibly to be part of a superspecies which includes also Mariqua Sunbird (Cinnyris mariquensis), Shelley's Sunbird (Cinnyris shelleyi), Congo Sunbird (Cinnyris congensis) and Red-chested Sunbird (Cinnyris erythrocercus). Has been suggested that this species and Beautiful Sunbird (Cinnyris pulchellus) link the "Nectarinia mariquensis complex" with the "Nectarinia chalybea complex".
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
erlangeri (Reichenow, 1905) - Extreme south-eastern Ethiopia (banks of R Daua), southern Somalia and north-eastern Kenya.
nectarinioides (Richmond, 1897) - South-eastern Kenya and north-eastern Tanzania.
