Angola, Benin, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Central African Republic, Congo [The Democratic Republic of the], Congo [The Democratic Republic of the], Côte dIvoire, Equatorial Guinea, Gabon, Ghana, Guinea, Kenya, Liberia, Mali, Nigeria, Sierra Leone, Tanzania [United Republic of], Togo, Uganda.
Unknown to Guinea-bissau.

Subspecies
Genus often subsumed in Nectarinia.
The following 4 subspecies are recognised:
- ashantiensis Bannerman, 1922 - Sierra Leone and southern Mali east to Togo and north-western Benin.
- nigeriae (Rand & Traylor, 1959) - South-eastern Benin and southern Nigeria.
- superbus (Shaw, 1812) - Southern Cameroon, Central African Republic and DRCongo (except north-east) south to western Angola.
- buvuma van Someren, 1932 - North-eastern DRCongo, Uganda, western Kenya and extreme north-western Tanzania.
