Subspecies
Possibly forms a superspecies with Malachite Sunbird (Nectarinia famosa). Subspecies nyikensis formerly known as salvadorii, but latter name invalid, as preoccupied.
Proposed subspecies idia (described from Mt Kenya) treated as synonym of nominate.
The following 4 subspecies are recognised:
dartmouthi Ogilvie-Grant, 1906 - Eastern DRCongo, south-western Uganda and western Rwanda.
itombwensis Prigogine, 1977 - Itombwe Mts (at 2350-3100 m), in eastern DRCongo.
johnstoni Shelley, 1885 - Highlands of central Kenya and northern Tanzania.
nyikensis Delacour, 1944 - Highlands in southern Tanzania, north-eastern Zambia and northern Malawi.
