Subspecies
Possibly forms a superspecies with Bocage's Sunbird (Nectarinia bocagii) and Purple-breasted Sunbird (Nectarinia purpureiventris).

The following 2 subspecies are recognised:

tacazze (Stanley, 1814) - Highlands of Eritrea and Ethiopia.
jacksoni Neumann, 1899 - Highlands of south-eastern Sudan, northern and eastern Uganda, west, central and southern Kenya and northern Tanzania.
