Subspecies
Genus often subsumed in Nectarinia. Has been thought to form a superspecies with Dusky Sunbird (Cinnyris fuscus). Nominate subspecies exhibits clinal variation in size, which increases from west to east. Described subspecies septentrionalis (from Mpumu, in Uganda) is synonymized with nominate and vaughanjonesi (from Kasempa, in Zambia) with chalceus.
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
cupreus (Shaw, 1812) - South-western Mauritania, Senegal, Gambia and Sierra Leone east to Cameroon, Central African Republic, southern Sudan, western Ethiopia, Uganda and western Kenya (west of Rift Valley), and from Gabon and north-western Angola (Cabinda) east to DRCongo (except south-east) and western Tanzania.
chalceus (Hartlaub, 1862) - Angola (except Cabinda), south-eastern DRCongo, Zambia, south-western Tanzania, Malawi, north-eastern Namibia (Caprivi Strip), northern Botswana (Chobe National Park, Kasane) northern Mozambique and northern Zimbabwe.
