Subspecies
Genus often subsumed in Nectarinia. Forms a superspecies with C. manoensis, and sometimes considered conspecific. Additional proposed subspecies in South Africa are capricornensis (described from Soutpansberg, in Limpopo Province), synonymized with subalaris, and albilateralis (from Port Nolloth, in western Northern Cape), considered inadequately differentiated from nominate.
The following 3 subspecies are recognised:
chalybeus (Linnaeus, 1766) - Southern Namibia and western South Africa (Northern Cape, western Cape).
subalaris Reichenow, 1899 - Eastern South Africa (Limpopo Province south to eastern Cape) and Swaziland.
albilateralis (Winterbottom, 1963) - North-western South Africa (western northern Cape).
