Genus often subsumed in Nectarinia. Forms a superspecies with Oustalet's Sunbird (Cinnyris oustaleti) and both have sometimes been considered to be part of a superspecies that also includes Orange-tufted Sunbird (Cinnyris bouvieri), Palestine Sunbird (Cinnyris osea) and Purple Sunbird (Cinnyris asiaticus).
Proposed subspecies anderssoni (described from north-western Namibia), lumbo (from Lumbo, in northern Mozambique) and arestus (from near Eshowe, in KwaZulu-Natal) considered inadequately differentiated from birds elsewhere in species' range.
