Subspecies
Forms a superspecies with Grand Rhabdornis (Rhabdornis grandis) and often considered conspecific, but differs somewhat in size and proportions. Proposed subspecies zamboanga, described from Masawan, on Mt Malindang (eastern Zamboanga Peninsula), in western Mindanao, treated as synonym of alaris.
The following 4 subspecies are recognised:
rabori Rand, 1950 - Panay and Negros, in west-central Philippines. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Visayan Rhabdornis (Rhabdornis rabori).
leytensis Parkes, 1973 - Biliran and Leyte, in east-central Philippines.
inornatus Ogilvie-Grant, 1896 - Samar, in east-central Philippines.
alaris Rand, 1948 - Mindanao, in southern Philippines.
