Subspecies
Has been placed in Minla, but differs markedly in structure, behaviour and vocalizations. Until recently, subspecies davisoni was thought to be a black-backed morph of saturata, but geographical ranges of the two are entirely discrete and both considered worthy of recognition. Individuals of this species in south-eastern Laos of undetermined subspecies, presumed to belong with subspecies roundi of adjacent part of Vietnam.
The following 6 subspecies are recognised:
annectens (Blyth, 1847) - Extreme eastern Nepal east to Bhutan, north-eastern Indian hill states, northern and western Myanmar and southern China (western Yunnan).
saturata Walden, 1875 - Eastern Myanmar (west of R Salween) and north-western Thailand.
mixta (Deignan, 1948) - Eastern Myanmar (east of R Salween), northern Thailand, northern and central Laos, northern Vietnam (northern Tonkin, northern Annam) and southern China (south-eastern Yunnan).
davisoni (Hume, 1877) - Southern Myanmar (northern Tenasserim) and western Thailand.
roundi (Eames, JC, 2002) - Vietnam (southern part of central Annam) and adjacent south-eastern Laos.
eximia Riley, 1940 - Southern Annam, in southern Vietnam.
