Subspecies
Proposed subspecies victoriae (from Mt Victoria, in western Myanmar) and cinereigenae (Meghalaya east to south-western Nagaland, in north-eastern India) synonymized with yunnanensis.
The following 7 subspecies are recognised:
simlaensis (Meinertzhagen, R, 1926) - Northern India (western Himachal Pradesh) east to western Nepal.
strigula (Hodgson, 1837) - West-central Nepal east to Bhutan and north-eastern India (western Arunachal Pradesh) and adjacent southern China (southern Xizang).
yunnanensis (Rothschild, 1921) - North-eastern Indian hill states, adjacent southern China (south-eastern Xizang, Yunnan and south-western Sichuan), north, north-eastern and western Myanmar, northern and central Laos and northern Vietnam (Tonkin).
castanicauda (Hume, 1877) - South-eastern Myanmar (including northern Tenasserim) and north-western and western Thailand.
malayana (Hartert, 1902) - Peninsular Malaysia.
traii (Eames, JC, 2002) - Central Vietnam.
cinereigenae (Ripley, 1952) - North-eastern India (Khasi Hills, Meghalaya, east to western Naga Hills, Nagaland).
