Subspecies
Subspecies orientalis fairly distinctive. Proposed subspecies croizati (from Sichuan, in south-central China) treated as a synonym of wingatei.
The following 9 subspecies are recognised:
cyanouroptera (Hodgson, 1838) - Eastern Uttaranchal Pradesh east to Bhutan, all north-eastern Indian hill states and north-western Myanmar.
aglae (Deignan, 1942) - North-eastern India (Mizoram) and western Myanmar (Chin Hills).
wingatei (Ogilvie-Grant, 1900) - North-eastern Myanmar, northern Thailand, Laos, Vietnam (south to central Annam), southern China (discontinuously north-east, central and southern Sichuan south to Yunnan, and south-western Guizhou, Guangxi, southern Hunan and Hainan).
sordida (Hume, 1877) - South-eastern Myanmar (incuding Tenasserim) and north-western and western Thailand.
sordidior (Sharpe, 1888) - Southern Thailand and Peninsular Malaysia.
rufodorsalis (Engelbach, 1946) - South-eastern Thailand and south-western Cambodia.
orientalis (Robinson & Kloss, 1919) - Southern Vietnam (southern Annam) and adjacent eastern Cambodia (Phumi Dak Dam, in southern Mondulkiri).
wirthi (Collar, 2011) - Southern Laos.
croizati Deignan, 1958 - South-western China (south-eastern Sichuan in Ipin region).
