Subtropical and tropical lowland and montane moist forest. Also, moist shrubland, plantations.

Subspecies
The following 13 subspecies are recognised:

  • nigriceps Blyth, 1844   -  Central and eastern Nepal east to north-eastern India (to central Arunachal Pradesh) and adjacent southern China (south-eastern Xizang).
  • coei Ripley, 1952   -  Eastern Arunachal Pradesh (Mishmi Hills), in north-eastern India.
  • coltarti Harington, 1913   -  Extreme north-eastern India (south-eastern Arunachal Pradesh south to Nagaland and adjacent southern Assam), northern and north-eastern Myanmar and southern China (western Yunnan).
  • spadix Ripley, 1948   -  Meghalaya and southern Assam (northern Cachar) east to Mizoram (north-eastern India), eastern Bangladesh, southern and south-eastern Myanmar (including Tenasserim) and north-western and western Thailand.
  • yunnanensis La Touche, 1921   -  Extreme eastern Myanmar, northern Thailand, southern China (southern Yunnan, south-western Guangxi), northern and central Laos and northern Vietnam (Tonkin, northern Annam).
  • rileyi Chasen, 1936   -  Southern Laos and central and southern Vietnam (central and southern Annam, northern Cochinchina).
  • dipora Oberholser, 1922   -  Central and southern peninsular Thailand.
  • davisoni Sharpe, 1892   -  Extreme southern peninsular Thailand and Peninsular Malayasia.
  • tionis Robinson & Kloss, 1927   -  Tioman I, off eastern Peninsular Malaysia.
  • larvata (Bonaparte, 1850)   -  Sumatra and Lingga Archipelago.
  • natunensis Hartert, 1894   -  Northern Natuna Is.
  • hartleyi Chasen, 1935   -  Western Borneo.
  • borneensis Sharpe, 1887   -  Northern Borneo.
