Subspecies
May form a superspecies with Golden-crowned Babbler (Sterrhoptilus dennistouni) and Rusty-crowned Babbler (Sterrhoptilus capitalis), and all have been treated as conspecific.
The following 3 subspecies are recognised:
affinis (McGregor, 1907) - Southern and south-eastern Luzon, in northern Philippines.
nigrocapitatus (Steere, 1890) - Samar and Leyte, in east-central Philippines.
boholensis (Rand & Rabor, 1957) - Bohol, in south-central Philippines.
