Habitat
Subtropical and tropical montane moist forest. Also, subtropical and tropical lowland moist forest. From 200 - 3,050 m.

Bangladesh, Bhutan, Cambodia, China (mainland), India, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Nepal, Thailand, Timor-Leste (B) (NB), Vietnam.

Subspecies
Was in the past sometimes treated as conspecific with Taiwan Cupwing (Pnoepyga formosana). Subspecies timorensis seems to be possibly vocally distinct, may represent a separate species. Populations in southern Laos have not been assigned to subspecies.

The following 7 subspecies are recognised:

pusilla Hodgson, 1845 - Northern India (south-eastern Uttaranchal Pradesh) and Nepal east to all north-eastern Indian hill states, north, west, eastern and south-eastern Myanmar (including northern Tenasserim), southern and south-eastern China (southern Shaanxi south to south-eastern Xizang and Yunnan, east to southern Anhui and Zhejiang), north-western Thailand, northern and central Laos and northern Vietnam (western Tonkin, northern Annam). Also (probably this race) Hainan I.
annamensis Robinson & Kloss, 1919 - South-western Cambodia and southern Vietnam (southern Annam).
harterti Robinson & Kloss, 1918 - Southern Thailand and Peninsular Malaysia.
lepida Salvadori, 1879 - Sumatra.
rufa Sharpe, 1882 - Java.
everetti Rothschild, 1897 - Flores.
timorensis Mayr, 1944 - Western Timor.
