Habitat
Subtropical and tropical montane moist forest. Also, subtropical and tropical lowland moist forest. From 200 - 3,050 m.

Range (Guide)
Bangladesh, Bhutan, Cambodia, China (mainland), India, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Nepal, Thailand, Timor-Leste (B) (NB), Vietnam.

Rarity Status
Currently this species is not classified as a rarity in this country OR information has not been updated.

Population
Estimated population is unknown (2010).

Subspecies
Was in the past sometimes treated as conspecific with Taiwan Cupwing (Pnoepyga formosana). Subspecies timorensis seems to be possibly vocally distinct, may represent a separate species. Populations in southern Laos have not been assigned to subspecies.

The following 7 subspecies are recognised:

  • pusilla Hodgson, 1845   -  Northern India (south-eastern Uttaranchal Pradesh) and Nepal east to all north-eastern Indian hill states, north, west, eastern and south-eastern Myanmar (including northern Tenasserim), southern and south-eastern China (southern Shaanxi south to south-eastern Xizang and Yunnan, east to southern Anhui and Zhejiang), north-western Thailand, northern and central Laos and northern Vietnam (western Tonkin, northern Annam). Also (probably this race) Hainan I.
  • annamensis Robinson & Kloss, 1919   -  South-western Cambodia and southern Vietnam (southern Annam).
  • harterti Robinson & Kloss, 1918   -  Southern Thailand and Peninsular Malaysia.
  • lepida Salvadori, 1879   -  Sumatra.
  • rufa Sharpe, 1882   -  Java.
  • everetti Rothschild, 1897   -  Flores.
  • timorensis Mayr, 1944   -  Western Timor.
