Subspecies
Geographical variation considerable. Subspecies laotiana often synonymized with amyae; birds of latter subspecies from Tonkin (northern Vietnam), however, much larger and longer-billed than other subspecies, and further taxonomic investigation therefore required. Birds from south-eastern Laos presumed to be assignable to laotiana. Subspecies bakeri rather poorly differentiated from davisoni and perhaps better merged with it.
Proposed subspecies mendeni (from southern Sumatra highlands) considered a synonym of diluta.
The following 14 subspecies are recognised:
guttaticollis (Ogilvie-Grant, 1895) - South-eastern Bhutan and north-eastern India (Arunachal Pradesh, eastern Assam).
roberti (Godwin-Austen & Walden, 1875) - North-eastern Indian hill states south of R Brahmaputra, and north-western Myanmar.
bakeri (Harington, 1913) - Eastern and south-eastern Myanmar.
davisoni (Ogilvie-Grant, 1910) - Northern and western Thailand and southern Myanmar (northern Tenasserim).
amyae (Kinnear, 1925) - Southern China (south-eastern Yunnan) and Vietnam (south to central Annam).
laotiana (Delacour, 1926) - Northern, central and south-eastern Laos.
delacouri Yen, 1934 - Yao Shan (east-central Guangxi), in southern China.
hainana (Hartert, 1910) - Hainan I.
clara (Robinson & Kloss, 1919) - Southern Annam (Vietnam).
granti (Richmond, 1900) - Extreme southern Myanmar (extreme southern Tenasserim), southern Thailand and Peninsular Malaysia.
diluta (Robinson & Kloss, 1916) - Sumatra.
exsul (Sharpe, 1888) - Northern and central Borneo.
epilepidota (Temminck, 1827) - Western and central Java.
mendeni Neumann, 1937 - Highlands of south-western Sumatra.
