Habitat
Dense thickets in the understorey of primary broadleaved evergreen forests. Also in selectively logged forests, and mature secondary forests. Frim sea-level - 1,200 m.

Range (Guide)
Indonesia (B), Malaysia (B), Singapore (E), Thailand (B).

Rarity Status
Currently this species is not classified as a rarity in this country OR information has not been updated.

Population
Estimated population is unknown (2020) and decreasing.

Status NT
Habitat loss through illegal logging and conversion to agriculture are the main threats.

Subspecies
Has been thought to form a superspecies with Black-throated Wren-Babbler (Turdinus atrigularis) and Rusty-breasted Wren-Babbler (Turdinus rufipectus).

The following 3 subspecies are recognised:

  • macrodactylus (Strickland, 1844)   -  Southern Thailand and Peninsular Malaysia.
  • beauforti (Voous, 1950)   -  Sumatra.
  • lepidopleurus (Bonaparte, 1850)   -  Java.
