Subspecies
Formerly placed in genus Trichastoma. May form a superspecies with Scaly-breasted Illadopsis (Illadopsis albipectus) and occasionally treated as conspecific, but plumages distinctive and ranges parapatric. Individuals of this species in Ivory Coast and south-eastern Guinea not yet assigned to subspecies.

The following 5 subspecies are recognised:

  • johnsoni (Büttikofer, 1889)   -  Eastern Sierra Leone and western Liberia.
  • cleaveri (Shelley, 1874)   -  Ghana.
  • marchanti Serle, 1956   -  South-eastern Benin and southern Nigeria.
  • batesi (Sharpe, 1901)   -  South-eastern Nigeria (Obudu Plateau) and south-western and southern Cameroon east to south-western Central African Republic, south to extreme western DRCongo.
  • poensis Bannerman, 1934   -  Bioko I (Fernando Póo).
