Habitat
Undergrowth of subtropical and temperate montane broadleaved forest and in secondary forest, scrub and bamboo. From 1,400 - 2,400 m in summer, but generally from 500 - 1,400 m in winter.
South-central and southern Sichuan and extreme north-eastern Yunnan, in south-central China.

Estimated population is 2,500 - 9,999 (2010) and decreasing.
Status VU
Loss and fragmentation of forest within its range through logging and conversion to agriculture, disturbance from people collecting bamboo shoots and other forest products, and from grazing livestock and trapping for export as cage-birds, are the main threats.

Voice
Song is a slightly descending, musical, whistled 'w'yii-i w'yii-u w'yiiwi w'yii-u'.

Subspecies
No subspecies.
Closely related to Taiwan Liocichla (Liocichla steerii), and in the past often treated as conspecific. These two and Bugun Liocichla (Liocichla bugunorum) may form a superspecies.
