Subspecies
Has been treated in expanded genus Garrulax, but placement in present genus supported by recent molecular studies. Often treated as conspecific with Scarlet-faced Liocichla (Liocichla ripponi). No definite records from Nepal, despite type-locality restriction (although "Nepal" specimens exist). Individuals at Gongshan, in north-western Yunnan (China), of uncertain subspecies, presumed to belong with nominate.
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
phoenicea (Gould, 1837) - Sikkim and northern West Bengal east to Bhutan and north-eastern India (Arunachal Pradesh) and adjacent northern Myanmar and southern China (Gongshan, in extreme north-western Yunnan).
bakeri (Hartert, 1908) - Meghalaya, southern Assam (northern Cachar), Nagaland, Manipur and Mizoram, in north-eastern India, northern Myanmar (western and southern parts) and adjacent southern China (western Yunnan).
