Southern and eastern China: Yunnan (Simao region), and north-eastern Jiangxi (Wuyuan area).

Subspecies
No subspecies.
Very closely related to, and until recently treated as conspecific with, Yellow-throated Laughingthrush (Garrulax galbanus). Isolated population in Simao, in southern Yunnan, described as a geographical subspecies, simaoensis, on basis solely of yellowish-grey breastband, but this sometimes present in Jiangxi population.
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
courtoisi Ménégaux, 1923 - China.
simaoensis (Cheng & Tang, 1982) - Southern China (Yunnan).
