Subspecies
Genus often absorbed in Abroscopus. However, highly distinctive by virtue of its relatively large, flattened bill and exceptionally long rictal bristles. Birds from Naga Hills (north-eastern India), described as subspecies rupchandi, considered indistinguishable from nominate.
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
hodgsoni (Moore, 1854) - Eastern Nepal east through Bhutan to north-eastern India (east to Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland and probably Manipur), southern China (south-eastern Xizang) and western Myanmar.
tonkinensis (Delacour & Jabouille, 1930) - Southern China (western and southern Yunnan), north-eastern Laos and north-western Vietnam (western Tonkin).
