Breeds north-eastern Afghanistan (Nuristan) and western Himalayas of northern Pakistan and Kashmir. Non-breeding south-western India (Western Ghats south to Kerala and western Tamil Nadu).

Estimated population is unknown (2010) and decreasing.
Status NT
In its breeding range habitat destruction through timber extraction, excessive cutting for fuelwood and animal fodder, livestock grazing and burning. In its wintering range, increasing encroachment into forests, livestock grazing, hydroelectric power development, road-building and the harvesting of fuelwood and huge quantities of forest products such as bamboo and canes, are the main threats.
