Habitat
Subtropical and tropical montane moist forest. From 1,500 - 4,300 m , occasionally down to 750 m.

Range (Guide)
Congo [The Democratic Republic of the], Djibouti, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Kenya, Rwanda, Saudi Arabia (B), Somalia, Sudan, Tanzania [United Republic of], Uganda, Yemen (B).

Rarity Status
Currently this species is not classified as a rarity in this country OR information has not been updated.

Population
Estimated population is unknown (2020) and stable.

Subspecies
Has been placed in genus Seicercus. Geographical variation broadly clinal. Some subspecies perhaps untenable.

The following 9 subspecies are recognised:

  • yemenensis (Ogilvie-Grant, 1913)   -  South-western Saudi Arabia and western Yemen.
  • umbrovirens (Rüppell, 1840)   -  Eritrea, northern and central Ethiopia and north-western Somalia.
  • omoensis (Neumann, 1905)   -  Western and southern Ethiopia.
  • williamsi Clancey, 1956   -  Northern Somalia (Erigavo district).
  • mackenzianus (Sharpe, 1892)   -  South-eastern Sudan, northern and eastern Uganda, extreme north-west, western and central Kenya and northern Tanzania.
  • alpinus (Ogilvie-Grant, 1906)   -  Ruwenzori Mts, along DRCongo-south-western Uganda-Rwanda border.
  • wilhelmi (Gyldenstolpe, 1922)   -  Eastern DRCongo to south-western Uganda, Rwanda (Kivu Volcanoes) and Burundi.
  • dorcadichroa (Reichenow & Neumann, 1895)   -  South-eastern Kenya (Chyulu Hills) south to northern and north-eastern Tanzania.
  • fugglescouchmani (Moreau, 1941)   -  Eastern Tanzania (Uluguru Mts).
