Estimated population is 250 - 999 (2010) and stable.

Status VU
Habitat destruction and predation by introduced mammals are the main threats.

Subspecies
No subspecies.

Relationships uncertain. Similar in some respects to Macrosphenus species, but peculiarities include short blunt wing with vestigial outermost primary. Affinities with babblers (Timaliidae) or with Neotropical groups have been suggested. Treatment as an aberrant member of present family somewhat tentative. Further research is required.
