Subspecies
Subspecies flaviventris sometimes thought to represent a separate species, but intergrades with nominate in Nigeria (around lower R Niger).

Proposed subspecies meridionalis (from north-western Angola) synonymized with tando.

The following 4 subspecies are recognised:

  • flaviventris (Sharpe, 1877)   -  Gambia, southern Senegal, southern Mali, and southern Guinea south to Liberia and east to south-western Nigeria.
  • virens Cassin, 1859   -  South-eastern Nigeria east to south-western Central African Republic, south to Gabon and middle R Congo.
  • baraka Sharpe, 1897   -  DRCongo (east of middle R Congo) east to southern Sudan (Bengangai Forest, Imatongs), western and southern Uganda and western Kenya (Busia District), south to extreme north-eastern Angola, Rwanda, Burundi and extreme north-western Tanzania (Bukoba).
  • tando Sclater, WL, 1927   -  Southern PRCongo and lower R Congo south to north-western Angola (Cabinda, and Uige south to Luanda, Malanje and northern Cuanza Sul).
