Subspecies
Genus may belong with the vangas in family Vangidae but is retained in present family pending further study.

Proposed subspecies inornata (described from Ampotaka, in western Madagascar) considered synonymous with nominate.

The following 2 subspecies are recognised:

brunneicauda (Newton, 1863) - Forested parts of Madagascar (including forest relicts in central highlands).
monticola Salomonsen, 1934 - Ankaratra Mts, in central Madagascar.
