Subspecies
Forms a superspecies with Black-headed Tailorbird (Orthotomus nigriceps) and Yellow-breasted Tailorbird (Orthotomus samarensis), and all sometimes considered conspecific on basis mainly of vocal similarities.

The following 2 subspecies are recognised:

obscurior Mayr, 1947 - Western Mindanao (Zamboanga Peninsula east to at least L Lanao), in southern Philippines.
cinereiceps Sharpe, 1877 - Basilan (off western Mindanao).
