Habitat
Primary and secondary lowland dipterocarp, peatswamp and kerangas forest. From sea-level - 600 m.

Bangladesh, Brunei Darussalam, Cambodia, China (mainland), India, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Singapore (B), Thailand, Vietnam.

Habits
More often seen than heard. Forages with tail cocked.

Food
Small invertebrates.

Voice
A jaunty, reeling 'prreee', repeated at intervals of 0.5 - 1,5 s. Also a squeaky, grating 'zeettt'.

Nest
Two or more leaves bound together with spiders web and lined with fine grass or kapok.

Subspecies
Forms a superspecies with Chestnut-crowned Tailorbird (Orthotomus castaneiceps) and Rufous-fronted Tailorbird (Orthotomus frontalis). All have been treated as conspecific.

The following 5 subspecies are recognised:

  • atrogularis Temminck, 1836   -  Peninsular Malaysia, Sumatra and Borneo (except north-eastern).
  • nitidus Hume, 1874   -  North-eastern India (from Jalpaiguri, in western Bengal, east to Assam south of Brahmaputra, Meghalaya, Mizoram and Nagaland), eastern Bangladesh (Chittagong Hills), also most of Myanmar (except western), extreme southern China (southern Yunnan), throughout Thailand (except southern), Cambodia, Laos and Vietnam.
  • anambensis Watson, 1986   -  Tioman I (off eastern Peninsular Malaysia), and Anambas Is and northern Natuna Is.
  • humphreysi Chasen & Kloss, 1929   -  North-eastern Borneo.
  • major Chasen & Kloss, 1928   -  Tioman I. (off eastern Malay Pen.), Anambas Is. and Natuna Is.


Similar Species
Female humphreysi differs from Mountain Tailorbird (Phyllergates cucullatus) by having a rufous nape and crown rather than being grey and ornage-rufous.
