Subspecies
Genetic study suggests that this species may form a monophyletic clade with Greater Swamp-Warbler (Acrocephalus rufescens), Cape Verde Swamp-Warbler (Acrocephalus brevipennis), Madagascar Swamp-Warbler (Acrocephalus newtoni), Rodrigues Warbler (Acrocephalus rodericanus) and Seychelles Warbler (Acrocephalus sechellensis). These are sometimes considered to comprise a separate genus, Calamocichla.

Proposed subspecies zuluensis (described from KwaZulu-Natal, in South Africa) synonymized with nominate.

The following 8 subspecies are recognised:

  • neglectus (Alexander, 1908)   -  Western Chad.
  • jacksoni (Neumann, 1901)   -  Southern Sudan south to eastern DRCongo, Uganda and western Kenya.
  • tsanae (Bannerman, 1937)   -  North-western Ethiopia (L Tana).
  • parvus (Fischer, GA & Reichenow, 1884)   -  Highlands of south-western Ethiopia south to Kenya, northern Tanzania, Rwanda and Burundi.
  • leptorhynchus (Reichenow, 1879)   -  Eastern Ethiopia, southern Somalia and south-eastern Kenya south to south-eastern DRCongo, eastern and central Tanzania, south-eastern Zambia, Malawi and northern Zimbabwe.
  • cunenensis (Hartert, 1903)   -  South-western Angola and northern Namibia east to northern Botswana, south-western Zambia and western Zimbabwe.
  • winterbottomi (White, CMN, 1947)   -  Eastern Angola east to northern and north-western Zambia and south-western Tanzania.
  • gracilirostris (Hartlaub, 1864)   -  South-eastern Zimbabwe and southern Mozambique south to southern Namibia and South Africa.
