Subspecies
Has sometimes been considered conspecific with Tahiti Reed-Warbler (Acrocephalus caffer) and Southern Marquesan Reed-Warbler (Acrocephalus mendanae), but the three exhibit obvious morphological and behavioural differences.

The following 6 subspecies are recognised:

  • atyphus (Wetmore, 1919)   -  Islands in north-western Tuamotu Archipelago.
  • eremus (Wetmore, 1919)   -  Makatea I (north-western Tuamotu).
  • niauensis (Murphy & Mathews, 1929)   -  Niau I (north-western Tuamotu).
  • flavidus (Murphy & Mathews, 1929)   -  Napuka I (northern Tuamotu).
  • palmarum (Murphy & Mathews, 1929)   -  Anaa I (west-central Tuamotu).
  • ravus (Wetmore, 1919)   -  Islands in south-eastern Tuamotu Archipelago.
