Subspecies
Subspecies whistleri intergrades with nominate in northern India (Uttaranchal Pradesh). Variation throughout range possibly clinal. Birds from north-eastern India described as subspecies muroides, considered inseparable from umbratica.
The following 4 subspecies are recognised:
whistleri (Ticehurst, 1923) - North-western Himalayas from northern Pakistan (Kaghan Valley) and Kashmir east to northern India (Uttaranchal Pradesh).
brunnifrons (Hodgson, 1845) - Himalayas from northern India (Uttaranchal Pradesh) east to Bhutan and southern China (south-eastern Xizang).
umbratica (Baker, ECS, 1924) - North-eastern India (Arunachal Pradesh), southern China (south-eastern Tibet, western Sichuan, north-western Yunnan) and northern Myanmar.
muroides (Koelz, 1954) - Southern Tibet to southern China (Sichuan and Yunnan west of Mekong River).
