Subspecies
No subspecies.
Was previously linked to the sylviid genus Bradypterus. Appears to be closely allied to Calamonastes, but lacks a tailored nest and nostril structure differs. Paler birds in the more arid north of range described as subspecies petrophila. However, variation in colour is largely clinal, and naming of geographical subspecies considered unwarranted.
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
petrophila Clancey, 1990 - Namibia and extreme north-western Cape Province.
subcinnamomea (Smith, 1847) - Southern Namibia and western, central South Africa.
