Subspecies
Forms a superspecies with Grey Wren-Warbler (Calamonastes simplex), Miombo Wren-Warbler (Calamonastes undosus) and Stierling's Wren-Warbler (Calamonastes stierlingi). Overlaps locally in range with Stierling's Wren-Warbler (Calamonastes stierlingi), but segregated by habitat, and no hybridization between the two recorded.

The following 3 subspecies are recognised:

  • fasciolatus (Smith, 1847)   -  North-central Namibia, Botswana, western Zimbabwe and northern South Africa (north-eastern northern Cape).
  • pallidior Hartert, 1907   -  South-western and southern Angola (coastal Benguela and Cunene region).
  • europhilus (Clancey, 1970)   -  South-eastern Botswana, southern Zimbabwe and north-eastern South Africa (western northern Province south to north-western Free State).
