Vagrant to Niger.

Subspecies
Often placed in genus Prinia.

The following 4 subspecies are recognised:

erythropterus (Jardine, 1849) - Senegal to southern Mali and northern Cameroon.
jodopterus (Heuglin, 1864) - Cameroon, Central African Republic, northern DRCongo, southern Sudan and north-western Uganda.
major (Blundell & Lovat, 1899) - Western Ethiopia.
rhodopterus (Shelley, 1880) - South-western Kenya, eastern Tanzania, eastern Zambia, Malawi, Mozambique and eastern Zimbabwe.
