Subspecies
Occasionally hybridizes with Karoo Prinia (Prinia maculosa) in western South Africa. Geographical variation rather subtle. South-eastern populations of nominate subspecies (Northern Province south to Free State, in northern South Africa), on average darker above in non-breeding plumage, sometimes separated as subspecies ortleppi.
The following 5 subspecies are recognised:
bihe Boulton & Vincent, 1936 - Southern Angola and western Zambia.
ansorgei Sclater, WL, 1927 - Desert coast of south-western Angola and northern Namibia.
flavicans (Vieillot, 1820) - Namibia, western and central Botswana and western South Africa.
nubilosa Clancey, 1957 - North-eastern Namibia, northern and eastern Botswana, south-western Zambia, western Zimbabwe and eastern South Africa.
