Subspecies
Northern subspecies gangetica intergrades with nominate in central India.

The following 5 subspecies are recognised:

gangetica (Blyth, 1867) - Northern India (western Himachal Pradesh south to central Rajasthan and central Madhya Pradesh, east to western Bengal) and south-western Nepal.
insignis (Hume, 1872) - North-western India (Gujarat and southern Rajasthan east to Bhopal, in western Madhya Pradesh).
sylvatica Jerdon, 1840 - Central and southern India (southern from southern Bombay, Maharashtra and central Madyha Pradesh).
mahendrae Koelz, 1939 - Mahendra Giri (Orissa), in eastern India.
valida (Blyth, 1851) - Sri Lanka.
