Subtropical and tropical lowland dry grassland and shrubland. From sea-level - 3,500 m.

Subspecies
Sometimes placed in genus Prinia, but has shorter tail and distinctive song. Proposed subspecies harterti (from Libya) synonymized with saharae. Oman population placed in subspecies grisea, but may belong with striata.

The following 8 subspecies are recognised:

  • theresae Meinertzhagen, R, 1939   -  Southern Morocco, western Sahara and Mauritania.
  • saharae (Loche, 1858)   -  Eastern Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia and Libya.
  • inquieta (Cretzschmar, 1827)   -  Egypt, Israel and northern Arabia east to Persian Gulf.
  • grisea Bates, 1936   -  Western Saudi Arabia, eastern Yemen and Oman.
  • buryi Ogilvie-Grant, 1902   -  Southern Saudi Arabia and western Yemen.
  • striata (Brooks, WE, 1872)   -  South-central Iraq, southern Iran, Pakistan and southern Afganistan.
  • montana Stepanyan, 1970   -  Mountains of north-eastern Iran, southern Turkmeniya, western Tajikistan and northern Afghanistan.
  • platyura (Severtsov, 1873)   -  Plains of northern Turkmeniya, southern Uzbekistan and south-western Tajikistan.
