Habitat
Subtropical and tropical dry and moist shrubland. From 1,100 - 3,600 m.
Angola, Botswana, Congo [The Democratic Republic of the], Kenya, Lesotho, Mozambique, South Africa, Swaziland, Zambia, Zimbabwe.
Rarity Status
Currently this species is not classified as a rarity in this country OR information has not been updated.

Subspecies
Birds from south-western South Africa recently described as subspecies brookei, but this name is pre-dated by elegans.
The following 6 subspecies are recognised:
- dyleffi Prigogine, 1952 - Eastern DRCongo (north-west of Lake Tanganyika).
- oreophilus van Someren, 1922 - Western Kenya Highlands.
- perpullus Hartert, 1920 - Angola, southern DRCongo and western Zambia.
- shiwae White, CMN, 1947 - Eastern Zambia, south-western Tanzania and extreme south-eastern DRCongo.
- tinniens (Hartlaub, 1870) - Zimbabwe, adjacent highlands of Mozambique and summer-rainfall area of South Africa.
- elegans (Hartlaub & Finsch, 1870) - South-western South Africa (west of Port Elizabeth).
