Benin, Burkina Faso, Burundi, Cameroon, Central African Republic, Chad, Congo [The Democratic Republic of the], Côte dIvoire, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Gambia, Ghana, Guinea, Guinea-bissau, Kenya, Liberia, Malawi, Mali, Mozambique, Niger, Nigeria, Rwanda, Senegal, Sierra Leone, Sudan, Tanzania [United Republic of], Togo, Uganda, Zambia, Zimbabwe.

Subspecies
Sometimes placed in a superspecies with Red-faced Cisticola (Cisticola erythrops), but ranges overlap considerably.
The following 7 subspecies are recognised:
- swanzii (Sharpe, 1870) - Senegal east to southern Nigeria.
- concolor (Heuglin, 1869) - Northern Nigeria east to Sudan.
- adamauae Reichenow, 1910 - Cameroon and south-western DRCongo.
- belli Ogilvie-Grant, 1908 - Central African Republic, northern DRCongo, Uganda and north-western Tanzania.
- cantans (Heuglin, 1869) - Highlands of Ethiopia and Eritrea.
- pictipennis Madarász, 1904 - Kenya and northern Tanzania.
- muenzneri Reichenow, 1916 - Central Tanzania, eastern Zambia, Malawi, Mozambique and Zimbabwe.
